Learning outcomes
For the future teacher of German it is essential to understand language as a means of communication of a particular society or socially defined group. Therefore, in this course, learners will focus on the exploration of contemporary German from a sociolinguistic perspective. They will gain an overview of the spread and position of German in the contemporary globalised world, and will also focus on the relevance of German as a means of communication in specific areas of human activity (e.g. economy, tourism, politics, etc.). They will gain an overview of the teaching of German as a foreign language outside German-speaking countries and the promotion of such teaching. Understanding the variability of contemporary German, which lies in the high relevance of different varieties of German in everyday communication, will also be an integral part of the course. A relevant perception of this variability is extremely important for the future teacher of German. It is essential that teachers respect this variability and integrate it adequately into their teaching. Lectures and seminars are conducted in German.
Learners will be able to perceive and understand the variability of contemporary German to the extent that they will be able to convey it in their future teaching of German as a foreign language. They will be able to reflect on the position of German as a language of communication in German-speaking countries and in the world, and will be able to actively perceive the presence of other foreign languages in German-speaking countries and the advantages or difficulties associated with this fact (here and in the real teaching of DaF in the context of international projects carried out by the KNJ in the Czech Republic, Germany and Austria). They will be familiar with the problems of teaching German as a foreign language in a global context and in the context of areas of importance for German (e.g. the economy, tourism). They have an overview of institutions that provide good support for the teaching of German as a foreign language outside German-speaking countries, which is a great advantage for their future professional practice.
