Course content
1) Introduction 2) Sociological thinking, sociological imagination, the character of sociological knowledge. 3) Subject of sociology, relation of sociology to other disciplines. 4) Sociological fields and subfields. 5) The rise of sociology, sociology in the 19th century, sociology and modernity, major figures in the classical sociology 6) Overview of the historical development of sociology (schools, approaches, paradigms). 7) Sociology in the 20the century, current crisis of sociology. 8) Overview of the Czech sociology. 9) Social actors, groups, society, socialization. Everyday life, ritualization of social action. 10) Normality and deviation. 11) Social roles, social action, social interaction, institutions, cultural patterns, social values and norms. 12) Social action and social structure. 13) Social roles, symbolic interaction in everyday life. 14) Final test.

Learning outcomes
The course is focused on the key sociological terms, approaches, concepts, theories and methods, its aim is to help students to acquire the necessary knowledge and skills for the development of sociological imagination in the sense of the vivid awareness of the relationship between individual experience and the wider society. Students are also introduced into the different sociological fields and subfields. Particular issues are discussed in the context of contemporary social problems.
