Course content
Content of tutorials/seminar: Three-day field excursion to sites located in a small area with similar geology, pedology and climatic conditions but with contrasting management practice. Emphasis will be given on forests (different tree species composition, different stages from clearing area to maturity age, tree species switching, different methods of pre-establishment soil preparation) and agricultural areas (meadows, fields, cropland to grass conversion). Within some of sites, effect of natural factors (e.g., gleization, effects of topography) will be demonstrated. The emphasis will be given particularly on observing of contrasts in soil structure, amount and forms of overlying humus layer, character of soil profile and its colonisation by biota, and their discussion in situ in the context of the surveyed site. Students (individually or divided to small working groups) will read up on effect of a chosen management practice on soil prior to the excursion. During the field trip, they will introduce given theme to other participants. Based on feedback and review of scientific literature they will elaborate an essay and will present its content within the closing discussion seminar.
