Course content
|
Content of lectures: 1. What are viruses and where do they occur. Introduction, definition, structure of a virus particle, basic terminology. 2. Where viruses come from and how they can be classified. Evolution and taxonomy of viruses. 3. Virus life cycle, replication strategies and viral genome expression (Part 1). 4. Viral life cycle, replication strategies and viral genome expression (Part 2). 5. Host defense against viral infection. 6. Virus-host interactions, tropism, virulence. 7. Pathogenesis of viral disease. 8. Important groups of RNA viruses, their characteristics and examples. 9. Important RNA virus groups, their characteristics and examples. 10. Important DNA viruses, their characteristics and examples. 11. Retroviruses. 12. How we can defend ourselves against viral infection, antivirotics, vaccines. 13. Methods of detection and cultivation of viruses. Content of tutorials/seminar: Seminars will complement the lectures. The introductory seminar will be devoted to the organization of class work and the selection of topics for short presentations. Other seminars will be devoted to important discoveries in the field of virology and students will be able to test their newly acquired knowledge in various quizzes focused on virus identification or diagnosis of viral diseases. The seminars will include a visit to the KME laboratory with practical demonstrations of the evaluation of some virological methods.

The aim of the course is to gain a basic understanding of viruses, their reproduction strategies and the host response to viral infection. The major groups of RNA and DNA viruses will be introduced.
