Course content
Students are given presentations from lectures. Content of lectures: 1. Trypanosomosis and leishmaniosis. Causative agents and life cycles. Cultivation of blood flagellates. Pappenheim staining. 2. Trichomonas vaginalis. - life cycles and diseases. Protozoa in mouth. Wet mounts and dry smears - diagnostics of T. vaginalis. Cultivation. 3. Amoebic meningoencephalitis - Causative agents and life cycles. Other diseases caused by amphizoic amoebae. Cultivation and demonstration of amphizoic amoebae. 4. Opportunistic parasites I: Parasites and immunity. Pneumocystosis. Opportunistic strongyloidosis. Serological methods: IFAT, ELISA. 5. Opportunistic parasites II: Cryptosporidiosis. Isolation of DNA and genotype determination. 6. Opportunistic parasites III: Microsporidiosis. Causative agents and life cycles. Cultivation in cell cultures. Calcofluor staining. 7. Toxoplasma gondii - life cycles and diseases. Congenital toxoplasmosis. Ocular toxoplasmosis. TE. Histological methods in parasitological diagnostics. 8. Parasitic insects. Demonstration of main genera. 9. Parasitic arthropods Demonstration of main genera. Diagnostics of scabies. 10. Viral and bacterial arthropod - born diseases. Other serological methods in diagnostics. 11. Parasitic fungi. Dermatophytes and causative agents of visceral mycoses. Diagnostics of dermatophytes. Mycological cultivation. 12. Parasitology and medicine. Trends in parasitology. Outstanding institutes and laboratories. "From protocols to publication" - dealing with results and literature. Publication of results. 13. Therapy of parasitoses (J. Gutvirth). Excursion to Parasitological lab in hospital. Content of practices:
