Course content
Content of lectures: 1. The concept of sustainable development (introduction, definition, pillars of sustainable development) 2. Environmental ethics (environmental ethics and ecological crisis, deep ecology, ecofeminism, ecofascism, gaia hypothesis,...) 3. Effects and impacts of population change on sustainability (Malthusian population theory, Neomalthusian theory, impact prediction, environmental stress, precautionary principle) 4. Working with population data, population pyramids (working with graphs, interpretation) 5. Change vs. stability (adaptive change, tipping points in nature and society, limits to growth, persistence, adaptation, transformation, foresight, future scenarios) 6. Contemporary environmental issues (global warming, waste, natural resource depletion, urbanisation) 7. Contemporary social and economic issues 8. Pathways to sustainable development (pathways to sustainability, elements, planning, global sustainable development goals - MDGs, SDGs,...) 9. Sustainability in the corporate environment (paradigms, paradigm shift, CSR, ESG,...) 10. Sustainability in public administration 11. Sustainability indicators (GDP critique, methods of analysis and indicators of sustainability, measurement, ecological footprint, etc.) 12. Science and change (understanding resistance to knowledge and change), science and sustainability 13. Marketing communication of sustainability (change in consumer preferences, green consumption, conscious buying, greenmarketing vs. greenwashing) Content of tutorials/seminar: Exercises will be conducted with respect to the topic of the lecture and will lead to active involvement of students. Emphasis will be placed on formulating attitudes, interpreting findings, leading discussion.
