Course content
|
Committee Examination: A comprehensive assessment of the student's progress in the doctoral programme conducted approximately halfway through the standard duration of study. The evaluation consists of: 1. Preparation of a written report of approximately three A4 pages summarising the student's research progress. 2. Presentation of the progress of the dissertation research, highlighting the main objectives, methodology, results achieved, and future research plans. 3. An oral committee examination in the form of a guided academic discussion, during which the student demonstrates a sound understanding of the dissertation topic, the underlying scientific concepts, and the broader context of the research. Procedure: The evaluation is conducted as a committee review and expert discussion. Its purpose is to provide timely and constructive feedback on research progress, identify strengths and weaknesses, and, if necessary, set appropriate measures for the subsequent phases of the study. The assessment is carried out by a committee of at least three members. Prior to the evaluation, the student submits a written report of approximately three A4 pages summarizing research activities, publications, conference contributions, and a plan for further research within the dissertation. The evaluation itself should not exceed 60 minutes.

Learning outcomes
|
The course is designed as a comprehensive evaluation of the student´s progress in doctoral studies, at the midpoint of the programe (at the end of the second year). The assessment focuses on the quality of the research conducted so far, the ability to independently solve scientific problems, analytical and critical thinking, synthesis of knowledge, and professional presentation. It serves as s significant milestone id planning and guiding the dissertation research.

Prerequisites
|
The mid-term evaluation of the doctoral study programme is mandatory and takes place at the end of the second year of study, i.e., halfway through the standard duration of the programme. At this stage, students are expected to have successfully completed all compulsory elective and elective courses, as well as to have continuously fulfilled all other study obligations specified in their Individual Study Plan. However, successful completion of all compulsory elective and elective courses is not an absolute requirement for passing the mid-term evaluation. If any of these courses have not been completed, this will be one of the topics discussed during the evaluation interview.

Assessment methods and criteria

The assessment consists of three thematic areas: 1. Progress and scientific quality of the dissertation research: The student presents current research results in a 15-minute presentation, emphasizing methodology, scientific contribution, innovation potential, and alignment with the dissertation objectives. The committee evaluates the quality, depth, originality, and relevance of the work within the current state of knowledge and scientific literature. 2. Scientific knowledge, analytical and synthesis skills: In the discussion, the student demonstrates a deep understanding of key concepts, the ability to formulate and defend hypotheses, synthesize information, and discuss the topic in the context of the broader scientific field. This area also evaluates knowledge gained from specialized courses and related research topics. 3. Presentation, professional communication, and research independence: The student?s ability to present results clearly and concisely, respond to questions, and engage in scientific discussion is assessed. Independent thinking, argumentation, structured communication, and overall research and professional readiness are also evaluated. The outcome of the evaluation is a written report from the committee with recommendations for further research directions. The assessment is graded as pass/fail. In case of serious deficiencies, the committee may recommend revising the research plan. The evaluation may be repeated only once, no later than six months after the first unsuccessful attempt. If the student fails a second time, the committee will recommend to the dean to terminate the study due to failure to meet study requirements.
