Course content
Domestication and breeds of common carp, tench, rainbow trout and other bred species. Genetic structure of populations, population characteristics upon morphometry, cytogenetics, isozymes, mitochondrial and nuclear DNA. Qualitative and quantitative genetics of fish, colouration, scaliness, reproductive and performance traits. Chromosome sex determination, use in interspecific hybridization, sex reversal. Breeding programmes in fish culture: selection, hybridization, inbreeding. Performance and heredity testing, testing methods. Genome manipulations in aquaculture. Conservation genetics: conservation of rare species, populations and breeds, genetic drift, genetic resources, methods of in situ ad ex situ conservation, sperm banks. National programme of conservation and utilization of fish genetic resources in the Czech Republic. Fisheries genetics and legislation, stud books, breeding databases, state subvention policy in fish breeding.

Learning outcomes
The aim is to give basic informations on genetics and selective breeding of commercially important fish species in the Czech Republic, including conservation of original fish breeds. Particular goals are as follows: 1) To give information on domestication of main commercially important species, on the origin and development of breeds. 2) To explain breeding programs in aquaculture - crossbreeding, interspecific hybridization, selection, genome manipulations. 3) To explain in deeper consequences the regularities of qualitative and quantitative genetics of fish, chromosomal sex determination, reproductive and performance traits, as well as performance and heredity testing. 4) To characterize the genetic structure of populations and goals of conservation genetics. 5) To inform the students on the Animal Breeding Act and its decrees, on farmers´duties and on the state subvention policy in fish breeding and in the National programme for conservation and utilization of genetic resources for agriculture and nutrition.
A graduate should be able to perform fish breeding at a qualified level according to valid legislation, to evaluate results of fish breeding work, to maintain fish genetic resources and, appropriately, to deal with fish genetic research in Ph.D. studies.
Prerequisites
Knowledge on the backgrounds of fish genetics and reproduction discoursed e.g. in subjects Fish genetics and reproduction or Basics of fish genetics and reproduction during the BSc. curricula of Fisheries is a prerequisite for successfull passing this subject.

Assessment methods and criteria
Oral examination, Test, Seminar work

Active participation in the block practise in the GFC hatchery and in laboratories. Submission and defense of seminary paper. Correct answering at least 65% of the credit written test questions (min. 65 points of 100). Maximum three attempts, points are not summarized. Correct answering 3 questions of oral examination.
