Course content
Lectures will be focused to taxonomy and geographic distribution of sturgeon fishes in the world, threat to and conservation of sturgeons in open waters including CITES legislation, as well as on biology and physiology of acipenserids. Next lectures will be focused to genetics and reproductive biology of sturgeons, problems on dex determination and oocyte maturation, gamete cryoconservation, artificial reproduction and culture of sturgeons including the basic types of farming systems. production of sturgeons in Europe and in the world will be characterized as well as utilization of their products, directions of sturgeon farming in the Czech Republic and breeding in live gene banks. Practise and excursion will be aimed to species determination of sturgeons, their selection, tagging, reproduction and farming systems.

Learning outcomes
The aim is to give the students basic information on the biology, systematics, conservation and breeding of chondrostean fishes - sturgeons and paddlefishes, including the basic orientation in utilization of their products.
A graduate should be able of qualified breeding, reproduction and/or trade with acipenserid fishes and/or their products in accordance with valid legislation and to evaluate results of such activities or, appropriately, to deal with research on acipenserid fishes during his/her PhD studies.
Prerequisites
Knowledge on the problems of Controlled fish reproduction discoursed in the 1st. year of MSc. curricula of Fisheries is a prerequisite for successfull passing this subject.

Assessment methods and criteria
Oral examination, Test, Seminar work

Passing the test on sturgeon species determination, participation on practise. Correct answering the 3 questions in oral examination. Credit for students of combined/distant form of study is to submit a seminary paper on own choice from the topics of biology, conservation and/or farming of sturgeons or utilization of their products. Total range up to 10 pages of text with 1.5 spacing structured as BSc. or MSc. thesis.
