Course content
1) Health and illness through the view of psychology - Approaches to defining the concept of health. - Concept of quality of life. Approaches to defining the quality of life, methods how to detect the quality of life. - Introduction of key figures of Czech and world psychology of health and illness. 2) What weakens health and strengthens illness - Stress, common types of stress situations, typical stressors, stress detection methods, stress effects. Concept of learned helplessness. - Risk lifestyle: smoking, drugs, alcohol, risky intimate life, overeating, accidents and injuries. - Conflicts. What is a conflict. Conflict Typology. Conflict resolution strategies. Healthy and unhealthy aggression. - Burnout syndrome. Concept, detection methods. 3) What strengthens health and weakens illness - Defense mechanisms, stress management tools, coping. - Concepts of resilience psychology: resilience, coherence, hardiness, perceived personal fitness (self-efficacy). Concept of well-being, optimism, sense of humour. Types of personalities that are more closely related to diseases (Type A, B, C). - Socio-psychological dimension of health. The theory of social support. Social support research. Concept of attachment. - The meaningfulness of life, faith and spirituality. Methods how to detect meaningfulness. 4) Impulses for health from positive psychology - Psychology of hope. - Psychology of joy. - The psychology of happiness. - Psychology of forgiveness. 5) The psychological side of the healing process - Psychoneuroimmunology, Placebo. - Basic principles of psychosomatic approach. - How do we become patients? Relationship between patirnt - doctor, patient - hospital. Patient's struggle with a disease. Psychology of pain. 6) Psyche of patients - Patients with cardiovascular diseases. - Patients with oncological diseases. - Chronic patients. - Aging and dying patients. - People affected by sudden misfortunes. 7) Healthy lifestyle and possibilities how to develop psychological resilience - Body care: fitness, hardening, well-balanced diet. - Care for the soul: Relaxation - imagination - meditation. - Care for spirit: Developing faith and personal spirituality. - Self-recognition, personality development. - Work-life balance, time management.

Monologic (reading, lecture, briefing), Dialogic (discussion, interview, brainstorming), Work with text (with textbook, with book), Written action (comprehensive tests, clauses)
Learning outcomes
- To teach students to think about the phenomena of health and illness in a psychological context. - To demonstrate the relationship between physical and psychological aspects of health and illness. - To introduce the risks of the unhealthy lifestyle and the benefits of a healthy lifestyle. - To offer them some possibilities how to develop their own psychological resilience. - To provide space for self-reflection of their own life-style.
- Extending knowledge of the psychological context of health and illness. - Promoting a healthy lifestyle and a positive attitude towards life. - Strengthening social competences in accessing the ill or otherwise disadvantaged people. - Strengthening social competences in team cooperation. - Self-reflection of one's own lifestyle.
Prerequisites
The course is designed for anybody without any prior knowledge of psychology.

Assessment methods and criteria
Essay, Colloquium, Test

1. Active participation in lessons (at least 90%). Attendance at the lesson can be replaced by writing an essay within a set deadline (1 absence over 10% = 1 page of an essay). 2. Studying the main references from the basic literature on the topics discussed before each lecture (see section "References "). 3. Passing the final written exam. Those who fail to pass the written exam will be verbally examined. 4. Participation in colloquia (3-4 students) and expert presentation (30 min. long) at the final colloquium. The final colloquium is held on the same day as the written exam. The presentation must use of at least one source from the extensive bibliography (see section "References "). Other resources may be used here. For example, students can find relevant Czech or foreign journals on a selected topic. The theme of the paper must be related to the topic of psychology of health and illness. Requirements for students will also be presented at the first lecture. The materials from the "References " section will also be distributed to students by e-mail.
