What is religion and how can we study it? Is there a general decline in religiosity or is religious life in contemporary societies on its rise? The course provides an overview of possible answers to these questions from a sociological perspective. The scientific study of religion has a long tradition which takes up various forms and centralizes specific topics within the field of sociology of religion. The students will be introduced to the historical context in which the discipline was established and its development. We shall discuss classic theories of the relationship between religion and society as well as new trends in the study of religions.
