Learning outcomes
The aim of the course is to introduce social work as a theoretical, academic and practical discipline that focuses on the functioning of the individual in society. Social work promotes change, resolves problems in interpersonal relationships, and enables people to fulfill their personal well-being. This course will introduce the basic principles, methods of approaching the client. The client will be introduced as the main actor in the solution of his/her life event and the social worker as a guide who is an expert in the process of helping the client in his/her life situation. The principles of human rights, social justice and humanity will be introduced as key points of the relationship with the client. Social work intervenes where people come into contact with their environment. These interactions are the most important point in the process of intervention between the client and the social worker. The social worker needs to know the values of the relationship with the client and their personal values on which to base the boundaries of the direct care relationship. Therefore, the course will emphasize the helping relationship of the professional worker and the setting of boundaries in the client care process. The clients with whom the social worker works are often marginalized because of their life situation. The course defines social exclusion as limited or completely denied access to opportunities or certain resources offered by the social environment. Through practical insights into the work of a social worker in the field, students will learn the main determinants of working in excluded localities. The course focuses on the importance of assessing the individual's specific life situation as a crucial indicator for setting the way of working with the client.
Within the course, students will verify the theoretical knowledge from the lesson by independent work, which will be in the form of seminar portions or project tasks.
