Course content

Learning outcomes
The aim of the course is to acquaint students with the basic components of contemporary religious scene in the Czech Republic historical context which led to the contemporary state (the issue of secularism, development of new religious movements, migration). The subject has to help students in the basic understanding between the major religious systems (Judaism, Christianity, Islam, Buddhism, Hinduism), and to the specific examples groups operating in our territory.
Students understand the problems of contemporary religious scene in the Czech Republic. They are able to critically interpret information sources (sources, secondary literature, media image, etc.). They are able to analyze problems and other issues that relate to the status of religion in contemporary society (privatization, institutionalization, secularization, the development of new religious movements, etc.).

Assessment methods and criteria
Student performance assessment

The student is required to prepare a written paper, a powerpoint presentation and a handout introducing basic information about a particular church or religious society. The student confirms the choice of church or religious society by signing a sheet posted on the bulletin board of the Department of Philosophy and Religious Studies TF JU next to the office 4.28. All parts of the report (text of the report, abstract in the form of a handout, PowerPoint presentation) will be sent electronically no later than the last week of classes to the teacher's email address klapetek@tf.jcu.cz. In the seminar, the student will get a compact set of written and visual materials.
