Course content
- Terminological and methodological introduction - Mahayana buddhism (India, China, Korea, Japan) - Vajrayana buddhism (India, China, Korea, Japan, Tibet, Mongolia) - Taoism (China, Taiwan) - Confucianism (China, Korea, Vietnam, Japan) - Shintoism (Japan)

Learning outcomes
Lectures give a basic overview of the most important thoughts, figures, scriptures, schools and denominations of taoism, confucianism, shintoism, mahayana and vajrayana buddhism (including their syncresis) as they have been spreading through time and space. Lectures put the accent on the structural branching out of the eastern philosophical and religious traditions. A part of the course is also brief demonstration and explanation of selected ritual, symbolic and artistic artefacts of these particular traditions.
Students get a basic insight into various philosophical and religious traditions of the Eastern Asia and understand their mutual similarities and differencies as they are showing in thought background, practice and specific iconography and symbology of these traditions.
