Course content
1. The concept of religion. (problems of defining the general concept of religion from antiquity to the present; religious facts, experiences and norms). 2. Theory of origin and development. (evolutionary, depravation and responsive theories of the origin of religion). 3. Historical religions. (Friedrich Max Muller, Cornelius Petrus Tiele, Kurt Rudolph). 4. Typology of religion. (geographic, sociological, morphological, genetic and systematic aspects; J. Heller). 5. Comparative religions. (evaluation and scientific comparison, types of religious comparison; Raffael Petazzoni, Georg Dumézil). 6. Sociology of religion. (Emile Durkheim, Max Weber, E. Troeltsch, J. Wach, P. L. Berger). 7. Psychology of religion. (E. D. Starbuck, J. H. Leuba, W. James, R. Otto). 8. Deep psychology and religion research. (S. Freud, C. G. Jung, E. Fromm, K. Kerenyi). 9. Anthropology of Religion (E. Learning outcomes
The course deals with the basic problems, terminology and methods of religious studies. Students get acquainted with texts about conception of religion, typology of religions, magic, totemism, animism, polytheism, henotheism, monotheism, history od religions, comparative religious studies, contextual religous studies, hermenutic religious studies, phenomenology of religions, institutionalization of religous studies, Academic societies or religious studies and theology.
Student can understand methodology and history of religious studies.

Oral examination, Student performance assessment

Student must know the contents of lectures and recommended literature. Choose the publication of every one in group A and B. The test will be interviewed on their choice of literature. Specific selection of books signed by the student on the sheet posted at the bulletin board of the Department of Philosophy and Religious Studies, Faculty of Theology, next to office number 4.28.
