Course content
Main epochs and streams of Indian religous literature - Ancient religious works (vedas, upanishads) - The Gita - Tamil literature of 1st mil. C.E. (alvars, shaiva siddhas) - Vedanta schools (Shankara, Ramanuja, Vallabha, Madhva etc.) - Marathi religious works (Jnandev, Eknath, Tukaram etc.) - Sant tradition (Kabir, Surdas, Nanak, Mirabai, Tulsidas) - shaiva literature of the North and of the South (Srikanth, Basava, Abhinavgupta etc.) - Bengali renaissance - Modern works (Gandhi, Radhakrishnan, Ranade, R. Maharishi, Aurobindo, Narayana, Rajagopalachari, Vivekananda, Yogananda, Dasgupta etc.) - During all lessons the translations and commentaries by various authors from India and West will be used, especially comentaries by Indian Catholic theologians (N. Sheth S.J., H. D´Almeida S.J., D. Acharuparambil, OCD, S. Painadath, S.J. etc.)

Learning outcomes
The subject aim is an introduction to religious and philosophical texts from various epochs of the Indian history. Significant works of Indian religions (especially of hinduism) will be read through and simultaneously commented, put in a wider context and compared with other texts. The goal is that the student gains an overview of important texts of Indian ancient, medieval and modern age, overview of the authors and gets oriented in this area. The texts will be read in Czech from the Czech indologist translations, in English or Czech from English translations (depending on the student language skills) and the original language texts will be also briefly introduced and translated. In the framework of the subject, the interpretations of these texts by Indian Catholic theologians will be introduced and used as well.
Student will gain the basic overview of the richness and variety of Indian (Hindu) religious and philosophical literatury. He/She will discern main epochs, various schools and their main representatives. He/She will penetrate into the themes of this literature and will be able of independent opinion, comparison and thinking in the larger framework, alse due to the use of various commentaries including interpretations by Indian Christian theologians.
Prerequisites
Basic knowledge of Indian history and Indian religion, knowledge of basic terms as vedas, Bhagavadgita, vaishnavism, shaivism, yoga etc.
