Course content
|
The lectures cover the following areas: I. Basic concept of Judaism II. Historical development of Judaism from the ancient times to the present with emphasis on the situation in the Czech lands III. Literature of Judaism (Jewish Bible, apocrypha, hellenistic literature, rabbinic literature, commentaries, halachic compedia, Jewish mystical literature, philosophical literature) IV. Jewish festivals, Jewish traditions and customs

Monologic (reading, lecture, briefing), Dialogic (discussion, interview, brainstorming)

Learning outcomes
|
Students gain basic overview of Judaism. They learn its structure, its important concepts, relevant historical data. They will be also acquinted with relationship of Judaism to other Western monotheistic religions.
The student is acquainted with basis concepts of Judaism, its history, literature, traditions and customs.

Assessment methods and criteria
|
Oral examination
An oral exam will ascertain, that the students covered and know the contents of the literature. Questions will be asked from each of the main areas (see I-IV above): Students are required to read and know the assigned reading: - FISHBANE, Michael A., Judaism: Revelation and Traditions. HarperOne, 1988. - Stefon, Matt, Judaism: History, Belief, and Practice. New York: Britannica Educational; Rosen Educational, 2012. The Britannica Guide to Religion. If needed, the students also work with selected chapters from other suggested literature.
