Course content
|
In this course, the view of leisure is extended by historical, sociological and philosophical aspects. Topics covered: 1. The concept of time in different times and cultures 2. Biblical conception of time 3. Time in philosophical discourse (Sokol) 4. The concept of ancient "scholé" (Plato, Aristotle, contemporary reflection: Arendt) 5. Contemplation (monastic tradition, contemporary reflection: Pieper) 6. Modern concept of work / modern concept of free time 7. Three interpretations of the origin of the modern concept of "leisure time" (Nahrstedt, Opaschowski, Giesecke) 8. "Leisure society" (Veblen, Dumazédier, Opaschowski, contemporary reflection) 9. Specifics of leisure in consumer society and current views on leisure 10. Leisure of children and youth 11. Current research on free time of children and youth

Learning outcomes
|
The aim of the course is to enable students to discover the complex relationship between work and leisure, activity and contemplation in history and at the same time provide a brief insight into current leisure research.
After completing the course, the student is able to reflect the phenomenon of leisure in the context of European culture and philosophy.

Prerequisites
|
This course complements the topics covered in the course Pedagogy of leisure. Therefore, it is assumed that both subjects are studied simultaneously.

Assessment methods and criteria
|
Student performance assessment
To successfully complete the course, the student must demonstrate the ability to understand the chosen topic. An essential part of this course is self-study of literature, which is the duty of every student. We recommend that the student also use foreign literature, which the teacher updates every year.
