Course content
In this course, the view of leisure is extended by historical, sociological and philosophical aspects. Topics covered: 1. Time - a decisive variable for the history of the world and the biography of the individual 2. Biblical conception of time 3. The concept of ancient "scholé" (Plato, Aristotle, contemporary reflection: Arendt) 4. Contemplation (monastic tradition, contemporary reflection: Pieper) 5. Modern concept of work / modern concept of leisure time 6. Social problems associated with work and leisure (19th century) 7. Current theories of leisure 8. Leisure - the topic of social sciences of the second half of the 20th century 9. Leisure research (past, today) 10. The Leisure Society (Veblen, Dumazédier, Opaschowski, contemporary reflection) 11. Specifics of leisure in consumer society and current views on leisure 12. Children and youth and leisure

Learning outcomes
The aim of the course is to enable students to discover the complex relationship between work and leisure, activity and contemplation in history and at the same time provide a brief insight into current leisure research.
After completing the course, the student is able to reflect the phenomenon of leisure in the context of European culture and philosophy.
Prerequisites
This course complements the topics covered in the course Pedagogy of leisure. Therefore, it is assumed that both subjects are studied simultaneously.

Student performance assessment

To successfully complete the course, the student must demonstrate the ability to understand the chosen topic. An essential part of this course is self-study of literature, which is the duty of every student. We recommend that the student also use foreign literature, which the teacher updates every year.
