Course content

Charitable activity in the history of the early church: widow communities, patrimonium pauperum, period of persecution, the first union of the state and the church in the Constantine era 2. Helping others in the Middle Ages and early modern times: charitable religious orders, the connection of social care of the state and the church in the office of the royal almsman, humanism and its challenges, the period of confessionalization. 3. Enlightenment - cooperation of the Enlightenment state and the church in the fight against social problems 4. Parish poor institutes as the basis of the social system in the Habsburg monarchy 5. The involvement of the Catholic Church in the social problems brought about by the First World War 6. Czech Catholic Charity after the First World War 7. History of spiritual service in the military and prison area 8. Cross-section of the latest history of the state and the church and their results in documents (concordat in 1855, Modus vivendi, the era of Nazism and Communism) 9. Current solutions and challenges to the relationship between church and state in the field of social services

Learning outcomes
The course acquaints students with the historical development of Christian charity, which is one of the basic services that the church has provided in society since its inception, and more generally deals with the church's relationship to social issues and helping others in history. It focuses mainly on the period of the last three centuries, not only because we find the historical roots of modern theology in the complex relations of religious and social milieu of this period, but also because it was at this time that the relationship between church and state was formed. the position of persons and church institutions engaged and working in the field of services to the needy.
Student gains knowlenge to interpret the problematic of the relationship between the state and the Catholic Church on the field of christian charity.
Prerequisites
This course has no prerequisites. It is intended primarily for students of the Theology.

Assessment methods and criteria
Colloquium

Acquisition of knowledge from this course, which will be verified in an oral examination at the end of the semester.
