Course content
The course covers the following areas: 1. Augustine and Pelagius: the dispute over freedom and grace 2. Second Council in Nicea 3. Fourth Council in Constantinople 4. The great papal councils of the Middle Ages and their teachings 5. History of ancient and medieval monasticism - the importance of religious life for European civilization 6. Renaissance humanists and their contribution to the vision of Christianity 7. Christianity at the beginning of American history and its development in the following centuries 8. The spiritual roots of the Catholic Enlightenment and the development of that direction in the eighteenth century 9. The first Vatican Council - roots, course and consequences 10. World ecumenical movement

Learning outcomes
The course is focused on deepening knowledge in the field of church history. It deals with the development of selected topics, which were only briefly mentioned in the course General Church History Basic in the bachelor's degree program in Theology. The aim is to gain knowledge in topics that are then easily interconnected with others, especially theological subjects, or increase the student's competence for a correct understanding of the study content of the field studied.

Prerequisites
Prerequisite is passing the subject General Church History basic resp. completion of a basic course in church history.

Assessment methods and criteria
Oral examination

The course is a lecture and this means that individual topics and areas are the subject of lectures during the semester. Lectures are supplemented by self-study of recommended literature and subsequent individual consultations according to the student's needs to successfully understand the more complex parts of the studied issues. Possibility of communication with the teacher's email or using e-learning. The course does not presuppose any input knowledge beyond the requirements of the admission procedure. The student's individual work consists in self-study of recommended literature. The student checks the acquisition of knowledge on the basis of answering control questions for individual topics of study aids, which are accessible through e-learning. In combined or distance form, the basis of contact is e-learning, supplemented by the possibility of communication by email and via Skype. The student will receive basic information and instructions during two group consultations/meetings - the date is published in the student's schedule. The teacher is also offered the possibility of another individual personal consultation - during the semester students will receive 3 group invitations via the Stag system to the opportunity to individually consult the study directly with the teacher in his office in the building of TF JU in České Budějovice. Expert consultations will be supplemented by the presentation of selected more difficult topics from the given thematic areas in the form of a lecture. Professional scheduled consultations are bulk. Students are required to study materials for individual thematic blocks.
