Course content
Definition of conservation biology. History of conservation. Ethical principles of nature conservation. Biodiversity - species diversity, genetic diversity, ecosystem diversity. Ecological economics. Environmental ethics. Threats to biodiversity - human population growth, habitat destruction, habitat fragmentation, environmental degradation and pollution, overexploitation of resources. Climate change. Extinction of species. Protection of populations and species. In situ and ex situ conservation. Protected areas. Nature conservation outside protected areas. Sustainable development. Nature revitalisation and rehabilitation. Nature conservation legislation.

Learning outcomes
The aim of the course is to introduce students to the modern fundamentals of conservation biology, with particular reference to agroecosystems and the surrounding landscape.
The student will gain an overview of the basic biological principles of nature conservation, especially agroecosystems.

Basics in ecology

Assessment methods and criteria
Oral examination, Written examination

Active engangement on the practices, passing the tests. Examination is in written and oral form.
