Course content
1.-2.Organisms used in microbial biotechnologies: Viruses, bacteria, yeasts, fungi. 3. Laboratory and industrial biotechnology. 4. Relationship between chemical production and biotechnologies. 5. Gene transfers using recombinant DNA technology. 6. Influencing gene expression in prokaryotes. Gene expression from strong and regulatable promoters. 7. Gene modification. Fusion proteins. Increasing the stability of proteins. 8. Yeast expression systems. 9. Systems using insect cells, mammalian expression systems. 10. Microbial insecticides. 11. Production of therapeutic proteins and vaccines. Gene therapy. 12. Algal biotechnology. 13.-14. Excursion to industrial operation - production of antibiotics, algal biotechnology.

Learning activities and teaching methods

Learning outcomes
The course focuses on molecular biotechnology providing an overview of basic molecular biological processes in biotechnology and presenting the use of molecular biological methods for the analysis of biotechnological products. Emphasis is placed primarily on the molecular biotechnology of microorganisms.
Students are familiar with the principles of biotechnological production in small and medium scale.
Prerequisites
Knowledge of the basics of genetics, molecular biology and basic molecular biological methods is assumed.

Combined exam
