Course content
|
Contents of blocks: 1. Biotechnology in livestock breeding - general introduction. 2. Biotechnology in the field of animal reproduction. 3. Introduction to the issue of artificial insemination of livestock. 4. Bovine insemination: bovine semen collection, ejaculate quality analysis; conservation of bull ejaculate; sex of semen in cattle; performing insemination with frozen bovine semen. 5. Synchronization of oestrus and ovulation of stallions, OVSYNCH method. 6. Species differences in insemination issues. 7. Embryo transfer in cattle. Cryopreservation of embryos. Innovative vitrification techniques. 8. Reproductive cloning of animals. 9. Biotechnology in animal health. Possibilities of therapeutic interventions in the immune system of animals. 10. Active immunization, vaccination, vaccination history, types of vaccines. ELISA tests. Examples of vaccinations in livestock, mammals and poultry. 11. Passive immunization. Hyperimmune sera, therapeutic use of immunoglobulins. Monoclonal antibodies. Hybridoma technologies. 12. Biotechnology in animal nutrition. The importance of probiotics in the nutrition and health of livestock. Required properties, effects on the organism. Used probiotic organisms, microorganisms. The importance of prebiotics. 13. Application of biotechnologies in fish farming. 14. Application of biotechnology in beekeeping.

Learning outcomes
|
The aim of the course is to acquaint students with the current state of knowledge in the field of animal biotechnology of individual species of livestock, the perspective directions of their development with emphasis on reproduction, health, nutrition with use especially in breeding and cattle farming practice.
Students have an overview of animal biotechnologies focused on breeding and breeding practice.
