Course content
|
Biotechnology - main trends in biotechnology, traditional and modern biotechnology, biotechnological applications in food industry, agriculture, plant and animal breeding, biotechnology of heterotrophic and autotrophic microorganisms, molecular pharming technology, DNA vaccines, plants as bioreactors. II. Plant cell and tissue in vitro cultures - plant biotechnology in plant breeding and propagation, in vitro regeneration systems, systems for in vitro production virus-free plants, induction haploid regeneration and application of double-haploid technology, somatic hybridization. III. Genomics and GMOs - transgenes useful in breeding. Identification, cloning and mapping of genes of interest, recombinant DNA production, transformation methods. Trends in plant and animal transgenesis, transgenes important for breeding. Transgenesis, cisgenesis and genome editing. IV. GMP cultivation, use of GMOs/GMPs as food, technical raw materials, molecular pharming technology. GMO production, legislative issues of GMO handling, release of GMOs into the environment. Benefits of GMOs, risk assessment and possible negative effects on the environment. Detection of GMO in environment and food. Ethical and legal issues of genetic engineering.

Learning outcomes
|
The aim of the course is to provide an overview of the main trends in the field of genome editing, gene manipulation and biotechnology. Theoretical issues of transgenesis and biotechnology, practical applications in breeding, agriculture, food and pharmacy will be also discussed.
Students will be familiar with the issues of biotechnological methods and gene and cell manipulations. Students will be able to define the principles of methods of molecular biology, genetic engineering and methods and procedures used in plant and animal biotechnology. They will also be familiar with the issue of cultivation GMO plants, the producing recombinant proteins using genetically modified microorganisms, cell cultures and plants.

Standard knowledge of molecular biology, genetics and biotechnology.
