Course content
1. Information society and information literacy; information institutions (academic, public and disciplinary) and their services and information systems (file catalogues, EDD services), 2. Characteristics of the information process in the field, 3. Information institutions in the field, work with information resources in the field. 4. Electronic information resources and their types (bibliographic, full-text and hybrid; multidisciplinary and specialized; freely available and paid), 5. Basics of search strategy and search query development (keywords), 6. Working with search results - evaluation, sorting, export, retrieval of primary documents, 7. Selected multidisciplinary, specialized and citation databases, 8. The most important bibliographic databases (Web of Science), 9. Most important bibliographic databases (CAB Abstracts, Zoological Records, Biological Abstracts), 10. Full-text databases (Science Direct, Springer Link), 11. Ethical and legal aspects of working with information resources - principles of authorship, especially citation ethics; prevention of plagiarism, 12. Citation norms and rules, disciplinary citation norms and surveys of sources used, 13. Creation of profiles and research work focused on the topic of the bachelor's or master's thesis 14. Creating profiles and research papers focused on the topic of the Bachelor's or Master's thesis

Learning activities and teaching methods
Work with multi-media resources (texts, internet, IT technologies)
  • Semestral paper - 30 hours per semester

Learning outcomes
The aim of the course is to introduce students to various aspects of information use for study, scientific work and personal information needs. Upon completion of the course, students will be able to work with selected subject and specialized bibliographic databases, construct a search query, work with search results and retrieve full texts. The course includes an area of ethics in the use of information resources with an emphasis on copyright and plagiarism.
