Course content
Agricultural production in less favoured areas. Alternative crops - features, calssification and specificities of growing and use. Growing of minority cereals, leguminous, oil and root crops. Medicinal herbs and drugs production. Dye crops. Non-food utilization of crops. Less common ways of sugar, starch, oil and fibre utilization. Bioethanol and bionaphtha production. Biomass burning as a source of energy. Energy crops and woods.

Learning activities and teaching methods
Monologic (reading, lecture, briefing)
  • Preparation for credit - 10 hours per semester
  • Preparation for exam - 20 hours per semester
  • Semestral paper - 20 hours per semester
  • Class attendance - 56 hours per semester
Learning outcomes
The objective of the subject is provide knowledge about growing and utilization minority crops and about their significance in agriculture.
Students are able to orientate in the field of growing and selection of special and alternative plant species suitable for Czech Republic conditions - overview of cultivated and potentially suitable species, knowledge of their importance, biology, crop management, processing and possibilities of food and non-food use.
Prerequisites
Standard knowledge of field crop management.

Assessment methods and criteria
Combined exam

Active participation in exercises and excursions, understanding the curriculum defined for the exam.
