Course content
1. Atomic bonds, crystal lattice and its disorders 2. Properties of structural materials and their use in agriculture and transport 3. Iron and iron alloys - applications in agriculture and transport 4. Phase transformations of iron alloys in the solid state 5. Cast metals, non-ferrous metals and alloys - applications in agriculture and transport 6. Alloy metals 7. Composite materials 8. Polymers. Suitability of selected polymers for use in agriculture and food processing 9. Glass materials 10. Ceramic materials 11. Wood materials and limits of their technical use 12. Degeneration processes 13. Procedures for the selection of construction materials for use in agriculture and food processing. Sustainable use of construction materials used in agriculture and transport 14. Time reserve

Learning activities and teaching methods
Monologic (reading, lecture, briefing), Dialogic (discussion, interview, brainstorming), Work with text (with textbook, with book), Work with multi-media resources (texts, internet, IT technologies)
  • Semestral paper - 40 hours per semester
  • Preparation for exam - 45 hours per semester

Learning outcomes
The aim of the course is to acquire knowledge and practical skills about metallic and non-metallic materials used in agriculture, food processing and transport. The knowledge gained will serve as a basis for students to design machine components and ensure their serviceability.
The student is able to apply the knowledge acquired during the study defined in the Content section of this syllabus.
Prerequisites
Knowledge of mathematics, physics and mechanics at secondary school level

Assessment methods and criteria
Combined exam

Active participation in seminars, submission of seminar work, knowledge of the lectured material.
