Course content
|
Animal husbandry principles in organic farming including legislation. Conversion conditions from conventional animal husbandry. Philosophy and ethics of animal husbandry under organic farming conditions. Biological and etological requirements of animals on housing systems. The suitability of breeds for organic farming. The specific nutrition of individual livestock species in terms of natural needs. Performance, longevity and health of animals. Grazing and ecological importance of pasture in maintaining and creating of the landscape. Natural ways of rearing cattle, sheeps, goats, horses, pigs and poultry from the welfare point of view. Economics of animal husbandry in organic farming. Organic products, organic food, its finalization, certification and marketing.

Learning outcomes
|
The aim of the subject is to familiarize students with philosophical, biological and ethological aspects of organic livestock husbandry system as a producent of organic food, enviromental protection and ecological stability of the landscape. The main focus is put on animal husbandry systems that meet the natural requirements of animals, husbandry ethics and their welfare, with the aim of achieving optimal performace and high longevity of animals.
Students will gain specific knowledge about individual species of farm animals rearing under the organic farming conditions.
