Course content
The course provides both theoretical and practical knowledge in farm animal breeding. The course includes sense, aim, approaches and position of breeding within the frame of animal husbandry, genetic structure of population and factors of their changes, breeding of qualitative traits, characteristic and methods of studies of qualitative traits, genetic parameters and their use, analysis of components of variance, gene and environmental effects, breeding value, methods of progeny testing and breeding value estimation based on one or more traits, selection indexes and their use, economic importance of traits, methods BLUP and AM, accuracy of PH estimation, theory of selection, selection progress and its factors, correlated selection progress, systems of selection and their use, theory of hybridization and analysis of effects, classification of crossbreeding methods and their use, organisation of breeding programs and strategies.

Learning activities and teaching methods
Monologic (reading, lecture, briefing)
  • Class attendance - 30 hours per semester
  • Preparation for exam - 70 hours per semester
  • Semestral paper - 10 hours per semester
  • Preparation for credit - 40 hours per semester
Learning outcomes
The aim of course is to make students acquainted with scope of breeding work, with methods of affecting of genetic establishment of population and application of biotechnologies in farm animal breeding.
Students should manage basic principles of breeding work. They should be able to set up basic breeding processes and to apply them into the practice.

Combined exam

Students should be able to use basic genetic principles of genetics of populations and basic statistical methods.
