Course content
Lectures: 1. Psychology as a science, the subject and goals of psychology, biological and sociocultural determination of the psyche 2. Cognitive processes - perception, memory, learning, thinking 3. Emotions and feelings, functions of emotions 4. Motivation, theory of motivation, classification of needs 5. Personality, definition of the term, and basic theory. Temperament, typology of temperament 6. Developmental psychology, theory of mental development, factors of mental development, methods of developmental psychology 7. Prenatal period - organogenesis, tissue differentiation, functional maturation, life as a continuum, the role of the mother and the father, and the influence of the quality of the socio-cultural environment on the child's development in this period 8. Childhood - newborn - childbirth, Apgar score, unconditional reflexes, individual areas of mental development - infant - developmental gradients, individual areas of development, sensorimotor intelligence - toddler - social autonomy, areas of development 9. Preschool age - areas of development, socialization, playing - younger school age - areas of development, the role of the pupil, the beginnings of value formation, moral consciousness - puberty - areas of development, anatomical and physiological reconstruction of the organism, secular acceleration, identity development - adolescence - stabilization and independence, areas of development, intellectual performance, value orientation, adolescent crisis 10. Adulthood - younger (early) adulthood - fulfilment of basic life tendencies, areas of development, marriage, family, occupation - middle adulthood - period of life stabilization and climax, areas of development, marital and parental functions, occupational self-realization - late adulthood - incipient stereotypes, midlife crisis, areas of development, involution Old age - early old age - change of social position, somatic, psychological and social changes, changes of personality - late old age - family and institutional care, finality of life Seminars: 1. Childbirth and adaptation of the newborn to the external environment 2. Manifestations of spontaneous activity of an infant - game The importance of the family in the upbringing and development of infants 3. Educational problems in infancy 4. Emotional and social life of a younger toddler - the development of self-awareness Play and its importance for the all-round development of the child Peculiarities of emotionality in the older toddler period 5. The most common educational problems in preschool age 6. Personality development at a younger school age 7. Personality of the pubescent 8. Development of feelings and social relationships in adolescents 9. Prevention of premature aging 10. Problem situations with respect to the developmental stages of life

Learning outcomes
The course is theoretical and deals with general psychology. It acquaints students with basic psychological terminology, knowledge of emotional experience, cognitive processes and human behaviour. The outcome is the ability to describe the theoretical basis of psychology, the ability to explain the biopsychosocial dimensions of man, the ability to explain the structure of personality, its features, processes and states, and to describe and analyse individual human needs, motives and interests. It also provides information on developmental psychology. It informs students about the typical ways of experiencing, thinking and acting in individual stages of human life (from conception to death) in relation to the holistic concept of human personality. Knowledge of developmental psychology should contribute to the creation of realistic expectations and appropriate behaviour with people of different ages. The course introduces health and social psychology. It addresses the issue of psychology of clients and their families in health and illness. An awareness of medical psychology will contribute to a better knowledge of the client/patient and to an understanding of their needs as well as the problems the disease brings. Furthermore, the course leads to the acquisition of basic knowledge and skills in the field of psychotherapy. It aims at the development of self-reflection and empathy as key characteristics of the psychotherapeutic approach in midwifery.
The student: - describes the subject of psychology - is familiar with the biological, socio-cultural determination of the human psyche - explains the biological nature of the psyche and the relationship of mental functions to other systems within the body - defines consciousness, states of consciousness, and attention and its division - explains cognitive processes (perception and its regularities, memory and its types, memory phases) - lists cognitive processes (learning, types and phases of learning, thinking, thought operations) - defines the following terms: language, speech, intelligence, emotions, feelings, motivation, will, free process - describes personality and basic theory of personality - defines type, temperament, character - is familiar with the theory of mental development - lists the factors influencing mental development - explains the periodization of mental development - characterizes the specifics of mental development in its periods - is familiar with the psychological issues of the patient/client - describes changes in behaviour and experience during the disease - defines the following terms: pain, fear, and anxiety in illness - characterizes the subjective experience of the disease - describes the disease as a difficult life situation - characterizes the personality of a midwife and the relationship between a midwife and the client/patient - explains the concepts of iatropathogenesis and hospitalism - communicates adequately - describes the basic principles of mental hygiene - defines basic socio-psychological concepts (social cognition, culture, self-perception, socialization, intercultural differences, attribution styles, attitudes, social communication, social group, persuasion, social position) - characterizes social communication - uses social communication effectively - defines the concept of psychotherapy - explains self-reflection - uses empathy and psychotherapeutic techniques in the approach to the client/patient
