Course content
2/WS Lectures: 1. Introduction to ethics, basic ethical theories and their reflection in nursing ethics. 2. - 3. From Hippocrates to modern health / nursing ethics: dehumanisation of medicine, relation between a doctor / health worker and a patient, paternalistic and partner approach, helping professions and power, ethics and communication of a health worker with a patient. Dehumanisation of medicine, patient's rights, patient's autonomy. 4. - 5. Principles of modern health / nursing ethics and their conflicts. Convention on human rights and biomedicine, informed consent, in/competent patient 6. - 7. Ethical problems in gynaecology and neonatology, value of human embryo and foetus, end of pregnancy, mother's right (parents) and rights of the child, home birth, saving of premature children, assisted reproduction and surrogate motherhood, pre-implant and prenatal diagnostics. 8. - 9. Dying and death in health care, taboo on the death, dignified dying, palliative care, decision making in the end of life, patients' rights in unconsciousness, heroic medicine and the end of unsuccessful treatment, persistent vegetative conditions, assisted nutrition and hydration and life-sustaining treatment, past wishes. Problem of euthanasia and assisted suicide. Seminars: The content of seminars follows and deepens the selected topics of lectures. There is a discussion in seminars about the topics based on the knowledge acquired at lectures and study of professional literature. " Get familiar with the basic terms and problematic issues in philosophy with respect to understanding the relations between philosophy as a socio-scientific discipline, medicine and nursing in the historical development and nowadays. Assessment methods and criteria

Credit: active participation in seminars, involvement in discussions, preparation for seminar topics, self-study of basic and recommended literature, elaboration of a seminar paper for the credit, this paper shall compare and asses various opinions published on the chosen philosophical/ ethical topic in professional literature and they will be the grounds for own opinion which will be adequately reasoned? Colloquium: orientation to basic philosophical / ethical topics with respect to the topic of the seminar paper and ability to discuss it on the professional level.
