Course content
1. Philosophical integration of present day health ethics. 2. Basic ethical theories and their reflection in ethics of health care. 3. From Hippocrates to modern medical ethics: dehumanisation of medicine, relationship between a doctor / health worker and a patient, paternalistic and partner approach, helping professions and power, ethics and communication between a health worker and a patient. 4. Dehumanisation of medicine, patients' rights, patients' autonomy. 5. Convention on human rights and biomedicine, informed consent, non/competent patient 6. Principles of modern medical / health ethics and their conflicts. 7. Ethical problems in gynaecology and neonatology, value of human embryo and fetus, ending of pregnancy, mother's right (parents) and child's right, home labour, rescue of premature children, assisted reproduction and surrogacy, pre-implanted and prenatal diagnostics. 8. Dying and death in health care, tabuisation of death, dying, palliative care. 9. Decision making at the end of life: rights of unconscious patients, heroic medicine and ending of ineffective treatment, persistent vegetative states, assisted nutrition and hydration and life-maintaining treatment, early wishes. 10. Problem of euthanasia and assisted suicide. Dutch and Swiss model. Euthanasia vs. "let die". 11. Ethics of transplantation medicine. Ethical aspects of brain death, "opting out" and "opting in" systems of organ taking. The role of the family in transplantation medicine. An anonymous donor and receiver. 12. Medical research with participation of human subjects, ethical regulation of research, the role and scope of ethical committees.

Assessment methods and criteria

Credit requirements: Students elaborate an essay in which they reflect upon, compare and assess various opinions published on the selected ethical topic in the professional literature, and then try to formulate their own opinion. Oral test: Students show their orientation in the key questions of medical ethics based on their study of the basic compulsory literature and are able to discuss them at aprofessional level.
