Course content
1. Latin in the European culture, development of medical science and terminology. 2. Fundamental grammatical categories of Latin, Latin pronunciation. 3. - 4. Substantives of 1st declension, prepositions, non-attributive adjective. 5. - 6. Substantives of 2nd declension 7. - 8. Adjectives of 1st and 2nd declension, attributive adjective. 9. - 10. Substantives of 4th and 5th declension 11. - 13. Substantives of 3rd declension 14. Final credit test

Learning outcomes
The course provides knowledge and skills necessary to become well-informed of fundamental Greek-Latin professional terminology. Lexical and grammatical knowledge concerning medical terminology is accentuated, especially in 1) anatomy, 2) physiology and pathology, 3) diagnostics and therapy. As far as grammatical structures are concerned, only those, which have a close relationship to the formation of professional terminology (in particular flexion of substantives, adjectives and compound words). The fundamental vocabulary and understanding of the terms embedded in the Czech professional terminology is the prerequisite for study of the other medical disciplines. The course also supports verbal logic, develops feeling for the language and culture of speech.
The student should understand fundamental grammatical categories of the Latin language, they should acquire the right Latin pronunciation, they should become well informed of the dictionary and they should know the vocabulary and grammar of Latin substantives of all five declensions and of adjectives of the 1st and 2nd declension. The student should be able to distinguish attributive and non-attributive adjective and they should be able to it duly. They should know fundamental Latin prepositions. Successful graduation from the course shall authorize for registration for the Latin II. course.
Prerequisites
Fundamental knowledge of general grammatical categories is expected, which is necessary for study of any foreign language.

Assessment methods and criteria
Didactic test

Credit: In the course of the term, approximately 4 short tests for the purpose of continuous assessment shall be taken. The student should pass at least half of such tests. In the final credit test, it is necessary to reach a score of 70%. The attendance of the student should be adapted for the purpose of passing the tests.
