Learning outcomes
Active knowledge of English is a precondition for scientific work, particularly taking into consideration publications, which represent a part of databases available for PhD students. The active knowledge of English assumes text translation and understanding, and the ability to communicate. These skills are used at international conferences and during study attachments abroad. A mere translation is not sufficient, presentation (possibly didactic) skills relating to active communication in the foreign language are also needed. Moreover, the knowledge of English is needed for dealing with statistic softwares where most of the cases use English instructions.

Assessment methods and criteria

A written test will verify the knowledge of relevant language structures needed for correct written expressing (a requirement for an unmarked examination). The oral examination should prove the ability to communicate on a professional topic in the form of a dialogue, and to translate a random part selected from 100 pages of a professional text that have been prepared in advance (it can be a set of professional articles on a selected topic whose sum will be 100 pages of text).
