Course content
Lectures - 1 lecture 2 hours: Week 1 - 2 The subject of philosophy and ethics. Philosophical and ethical basis of social work Week 3 - 4 Issues related to the ethical dimension of human existence and the meaning of life (human dignity, finiteness of human existence, dying and death) 5 - 6 Professionalism of a social worker 7 - 8 Assisting professions and their possible risks 9 - 10 Ethical aspects of social work with clients with specific needs 11 - 12 Prospects of social work 13 - 14 Selected issues of social and political philosophy (social conflicts, culture, society, racism, human rights, etc.) and ideas for shaping the value system of future workers in the health and social field. Seminars - 1 seminar 1 hour: 1. Supplementing information from lectures and acquainting students with basic ethical concepts. 2. The relationship of ethics to selected social science disciplines, and acquainting students with basic literature (searching for relevant information). 3. Basics of ethics and philosophy in the social field. 4. Professional codes of ethics. 5. Ethical norms and their historical development (Hippocratic legacy, Nikomachov's ethics, the Ten Commandments, etc.). 6. Dignity of human life, dying and death. 7. Human rights, the relationship between moral and legal norms. 8. Specific ethical dilemmas in social work with clients. 9. Important personalities in the development of philosophy and ethics (Aristotle, Cicero, Aquinas, Spinoza, Kant, etc.). 10. Helping professions and religion. Christian ethics. 11. Professionalism of workers in the social field. 12. Value system of social workers, its formation (possible pitfalls) and prospects. 13. Ethics and multicultural society. Globalization. 14. Summary. Test.

Learning outcomes
The aim of the course is to provide students with a factual and methodological background to acquire critical thinking and the ability to reflect on their attitudes in practice.
The target competencies are an overview of the development of European philosophical thinking and its inclusion in the context of cultural and historical development of society. The student is able to name fundamental philosophical issues regarding socio-political concepts, and is able to argue and think about his/her profession with good prospects.
