Course content
Lectures: (2 hours) 1. Structure of substances and mixtures. 2. Nomenclature of inorganic compounds and stoichiometry. 3. Energetics and kinetics of chemical reactions. 4. Fundamentals of chemical thermodynamics. 5. Basics of inorganic chemistry, periodic table of elements. 6. Hydrogen, oxygen, water. 7. Chemistry of important non-metals. 8. Chemistry of important metals. 9. Basics of classical analytical chemistry. 10. Basics of instrumental analytical chemistry. 11. Biocatalysts. Basics of enzymology. 12. Nucleic acids and basics of protein biosynthesis. 13. Principles of metabolic transformations. 14. Basics of carbohydrate, lipid and protein metabolism and interconnection. Training: (2 hours) 1. + 2. Concentration, preparation and mixing of solutions 3. Calculations of equations 4. Inorganic nomenclature 5. pH of strong acids and bases 6. pH of weak monobasic acids and bases 7. Biochemistry of nucleic acids and proteins

Students will get acquainted with the basic concepts of chemistry and biochemistry. The outcome of the course will be knowledge that is both general and specifically relevant to the NT study programme.
