Course content
Lectures (2 hours): 1. Introduction to public healthcare (definition, delimitation, basic characteristics of the field and its brief history). 2. Definition of health, definition of public health, Act No. 258/2000 Coll., on the protection of public health and on the amendment of some related laws, as amended. 3. Increasing quality and safety in the healthcare sector, departmental safety goals of the Ministry of Health of the Czech Republic; basic medical legal standards. 4. Health status of the population of the Czech Republic and its expected trends. 5. Health and its determinants, living conditions and health. 6. World Health Organization - its structure, bodies, professional programs, campaigns. 7. Health promotion, health education. 8. Demographic development and its expected effects on health and social care. 9. Basic principles of organization of health care providers in the world, principles of functioning of foreign health systems. 10. Anti-drug policy of the Czech Republic, drug information system. 11. Financing of health care in the Czech Republic, system of general health insurance in the Czech Republic. 12. Health 2020 ? National strategy for health protection and promotion and disease prevention. Seminars (1 lesson): 1. Disease prevention, health promotion. 2. Health promotion in the family and at the workplace. 3. Health, health values, health education. 4. Health and its determinants. 5. Nutrition as prevention of CVD. 6. Movement activities. 7. Healthcare systems, healthcare financing. 8. Public health protection authorities. 9. Health statistics, meaning, basic indicators. 10. Issues of addiction, drug policy in the Czech Republic. 11. Professional ethics, mandatory confidentiality. 12. Health 2020.

Learning activities and teaching methods

Learning outcomes
The course introduces students to the complex issues of population healthcare strategy and policy. After completing the cycle, students will be able to understand the issue of health promotion and disease prevention through organized efforts of society. The subject also enables an understanding of the concept of primary (basic) health care according to the WHO. The content of the course also consists of parameters of the health status of the population in the Czech Republic, the influence of the way of life on the health status of its various groups. It also deals with the current state of the environment in the Czech Republic. It provides insights into healthcare strategy at global, national and regional scales. After graduation, students will be able to give a basic explanation of the terms used by the field of public health and understand the principles of the functioning of health care as well as quality and safety management in various conditions.
The student knows how to navigate the basics of healthcare systems and general health and social prevention. The student has an overview of the applicable health legislation. The student has knowledge related to health promotion, health promotion and disease prevention.
