Course content
Lectures: 1. Prerequisites for the start of pregnancy in women and men. Fertilization - gametes, course of fertilization, conjugation, early development in the fallopian tube 2. Implantation, placenta 3. Intrauterine development of the foetus 4. Placenta - vascular supply, maturation, metabolism, endocrine function, progesterone synthesis, proteo-hormones, placentas, pregnancy proteins 5. Femoral membranes, amniotic fluid, umbilical cord 6. Diagnosis of pregnancy and signs of pregnancy 7. Changes to the maternal organism during pregnancy: cardiovascular system, respiratory system, blood system, uropoietic system, gastrointestinal tract, endocrine system, metabolism, musculoskeletal system, skin and skin adnexa, immune system, and psyche. 8. Prevention in pregnancy (diagnostic examination methods during pregnancy, prenatal diagnosis and therapy, risk factors of pregnancy). Social and legal issues in connection with pregnancy. 9. Medications in pregnancy and their teratogenic effects 10. Addictive substances in pregnancy (including smoking) and their teratogenic effects 11. - 12. Organization and system of work in the delivery room/in an environment intended for childbirth 13. - 14. Physical examination, systematic screening of the mother; obstetric investigation 15. - 16. Cardiotocography 17. - 18. Birth canals; birth force, conditions of normal birth 19. - 20. Delivery mechanism, stages of childbirth 21. - 22. Spontaneous childbirth, childbirth times, duration of childbirth 23. - 24. Placenta, placental circulation; analgesia and anaesthesia during childbirth 25. - 26. Injuries during childbirth 27. - 28. Assessment of the newborn's condition, postpartum adaptation 29. - 30. New directions of childbirth management. Humanization of obstetrics Seminars: 1. Diagnostic possibilities of early detection of pregnancy - methods and results. History, cycle analysis, determination of the date of delivery. 2. Examination of a pregnant woman - general, vaginal, external, pelvic diagnostics, immunological pregnancy reaction, ultrasound examination in early pregnancy, laboratory examination methods. 3. Examination of pregnant women in the second and third trimester - general, obstetric screening, gravidometry. External palpation examination, entry in the documentation. 4. Ultrasound examination in the second and third trimester. 5. Examination of amniotic fluid. Echo control, cardiotocography, assessment criteria. 6. Recognition of high-risk pregnancies, risk factors of pregnancy. 7. Psychoprophylactic preparation of a woman for childbirth; goals, structure, forms of management of preparation for childbirth. 8. Educational standard programmes related to pregnancy, nutrition during pregnancy, skin care, sexual behaviour during pregnancy, sleep, physical activity, dressing, hygiene, dental care, defecation, lower limbs, nipples, protection against infection, travel, vaccination, etc. 9. Techniques of psychotherapy during pregnancy and psychological support. 10. Managing an interview with a pregnant woman and her family. 11. -12. Intervention of a midwife in accepting a mother for childbirth; anamnesis; physical examination, record to documentation. 13. -14. External obstetric examination of the mother, vaginal examination of the mother. 15. -16. Monitoring of uterine activity, echo of the foetus, assessment of the client's mental state, recording in the documentation. 17. - 18. Communication during physiological childbirth, cooperation with accompanying persons. 19. - 22. Care of a midwife for a woman (and her companions) in the first period of childbirth. 23. - 24. Possibilities of pain relief during childbirth. 25. - 28. Midwife care for a woman in the 2nd parturition, management of expulsion; techniques to keep perineum intact. 29. -30. Midwife care for a woman in the 3rd parturition and the postpartum period.

Learning outcomes
It is a profiling professional theoretical and practical course that provides students with comprehensive knowledge about caring for pregnant women and mothers. It focuses on the individual satisfaction of the bio-psycho-social needs of a pregnant woman, on the quality of her life, on the support of her health and the prevention of diseases and complications related to pregnancy. Students will learn the principles of physiological childbirth management and systematic care in midwifery (with a special attention to meeting the bio-psycho-social needs of the mother). The course provides comprehensive knowledge about caring for a woman during her puerperium. It focuses on the individual satisfaction of the bio-psycho-social needs of the puerperium, on the wellbeing of women, and on prevention of diseases and complications connected with puerperium. The course also introduces the irregularities that may occur during childbirth. It enables the acquisition of practical skills for the management of irregular childbirth - interventions and general care in midwifery for the individual needs of a woman during this clinical condition.
The student: - characterizes physiological pregnancy, its symptoms and symptomatology - characterizes the diagnosis and screening of pregnancy - identifies the needs of a pregnant woman - adequately educates a pregnant woman/family - performs physical examination of the mother - assesses the cardiotocographic record during childbirth - cares for a woman at all stages of childbirth - conducts physiological childbirth independently - applies the latest knowledge of natural childbirth management - applies an ethical and psychological approach to the mother - defines the period of puerperium - lists changes in the female body during puerperium - performs physical examination of a woman in her puerperium - defines the importance of breastfeeding for both women and children - demonstrates correct positions during breastfeeding - educates a woman about the care of birth injuries - demonstrates appropriate exercises for women during puerperium - characterizes changes in pregnancy as a precondition for possible pathology - identifies individual symptoms in high-risk pregnancy - adequately educates women with high-risk and pathological pregnancy - characterizes assistance in urgent care when the risk turns to pathology - assesses irregularities in all periods of childbirth - recognizes pathological positions of the foetus - is able to communicate adequately during childbirth (with the mother and accompanying persons) - defines irregularities during pregnancy - provides care for women in cases of irregular childbirth
