Course content
Lecture: 1. Nursing as scientific discipline. Bases of nursing. Definition of the discipline - system approach.Concepts and definitions of nursing. Nursing branches. Relationship of nursing to other science disciplines. 2.History of nursing. Non-professional nursing - characteristics. Medicine and nursing: Ebers', Smith' papyrus, Galen, Hippocrates. Charitable nursing. Factors influencing development of nursing. Beginning of professional nursing: Florence Nightingale.History of Czech nursing. Beginnings of nursing. Anežka the Premyslide. Charitable and order nursing cares. Diacons. Czech nursing schools. Development of nursing education in the Czech Republic. 3. International activities oriented to transformation of public health and nursing care. Historical resolution of WHO 1977, International conference at Alma-Ata, 1981 document of WHO - Global health strategy, 1984 European strategy of care for health, Health for everybody for the period of 1995-2000, Health 21- health of 21st century. Munich declaration, Prague declaration. WHO project "Nursing in action". Mission and function of nurses in the society. 4. Philosophy of change in nursing. Social context of nursing practice. Regulating system of nursing practice. Types of regulation: statutory regulation and professional regulation. ICN attitude to regulation of nursing profession. Regulation of human resources planning. 5. Professional education and competences of qualified nurses in practice. Basic principles of WHO European strategy for education of nurses and midwives. New curriculum according to WHO European strategy. Extended roles and tasks of qualified nurses. 6. Nurse organizations (national, international) and their significance for the development of nursing discipline.Concept of Czech nursing. Basic terminology of nursing. Forms and methods of nursing care. 7.Metaparadigm of nursing - concepts: human and human's needs, health, environment, nursing. Person and nursing - personality and basic characteristic, structure, dynamic, features and development of personality, nursing aspect of understanding of person. 8.Health and nursing - general characteristics of health, models of health, prevention and strategy of health. Environment in relationship to nursing care, to person and the person's health. 9.Philosophy of nursing - holism. Psycho-somatic interaction - human's responses to impulses from environment (stressors). Holistic theories of origin of disease - homeostatic. Holistic theories of origin of disease - psychosocial and bio-behavioral. Allopatic and non-allopatic approach to treatment of diseases. Seminar: 1.Implementation of interdisciplinary cooperation of nursing and other scientific disciplines Relationship of nurses to research. Understanding and processing of nursing definitions. Charakteric and significance of nursing disciplines 2. Personalities of Czech history of nursing. First Czech nursing school.Interesting features of hospital, health care institution, eyewitnesses. 3. Significance and contribution of Prague declaration, Vienna declaration.Specific implementation of 38 goals of European strategy in practice 4.Mission and function of nurses and midwives in practice. Registration from nurse's point of view.Role of nurse and midwife in preventive programs 5.Do we understand the principles of WHO European strategy for education of nurses and midwives? 6. Significance of nurse organizations for development of nursing discipline.Membership in organizations optional x compulsory?Cooperation of international and national organizations 7.Implementation of nursing process method in individual forms of nursing care 8.Characteristics of relationship between individual concepts of nursing metaparadigm.Interaction between person and nursing.Nurse's and midwife's knowledge of personality psychology 9. Environment in relationship to nursing care.Mutual comparison of individual models

Learning outcomes
Understand the context of historical development in the area of nursing until the present. Understand the fundamentals of holistic philosophy and holistic approach in care for health of human, family and community. Understand basic values (faith, belief) of nursing reflected into ethical principles and concept models of nursing practice. Understand basic concepts constituting the metaparadigm of nursing. Get acquainted with nursing paradigm - theories and concept models. Acquire new terminology from the area of nursing. Get acquainted with legislation, be able to define the contents of Nursing concept. Understand philosophy of change in nursing. Clarify basic principles of WHO European strategy for education of nurses and midwives, including the context of new curriculum.
The student is able to define nursing as modern scientific discipline with its own philosophy, value system, subject of investigation. The student knows historical development of nursing in our country and in the world and is able to analyze historical context. The student is able to quote and understand definitions of nursing. The student knows legislation related to provision of nursing care. The student is able to use nursing terminology. The student knows the contents of curriculum. The student knows international activities oriented to transformation of nursing and understands conclusions and contribution of such activities for the development of nursing discipline. The student defines principle of holistic care.
