Course content
1. - 2. Geriatric physical fragility and instability. Nurse examination, evaluation and measurement techniques, assessment of patient needs, determine the nursing problems. Education in regime measures and implementation possibilities. Consulting activities. 3. - 5. Specialized nursing care for patients with large geriatric syndromes - physical examination with using rating scales, assessment of patient needs, determine the nursing problems. Education in regime measures and implementation possibilities. Consulting activities. 6. - 7. Specialized nursing care with a focus on intellectual disorders in the elderly (dementia, depression, delirium). Physical examination with using rating scales. Plan of nursing interventions, education in regime measures and implementation possibilities. Consulting activities. 8. - 9. Specialized nursing care with a focus on intellectual disorders in the elderly (behavioral disorders, syndrome of geriatric terminal deterioration). Physical examination with using rating scales. Plan of nursing interventions, education in regime measures and implementation possibilities. Consulting activities. 10. - 12. Specialized nursing care for elderly people with the syndrome of anorexia, malnutrition and dehydration - physical examination with using rating scales. Plan of nursing interventions, education in regime measures and implementation possibilities. Consulting activities. 13. - 14. Activities for preserving state sovereignty and habits of senior, senior activation. Providing a safe, uncluttered home environment. Life review. Motivation means appropriate in patients with dementia. 15. - 16. Caring for patients with sensory disabilities in their own environment. Identification of worsening symptoms. 17. - 20. The community health care system - home care, home care services. The social care system - advice, services, care allowances.

Learning outcomes
The subject is conceived as theoretical-practical unit. It is part of the complex subjects of clinical nursing. Students will be familiar with the specifics of the most common pathologies in age and specifics of nursing care for geriatric patients. The course aims to that the student will acquire knowledge in specific and general nursing in geriatric care and care of older people.
Knowledge: Student is able to define the basic concepts of geriatrics. Student will know the definition, content, clinical and organizational aspects of geriatrics, gerontology, geriatric nursing. Student is able to define the specifics of the nursing process in geriatric patients .. Student is able to define and characterize the concepts of old age, aging. Student is able to determine the age, calendar and functional age. Student knows the typical and atypical manifestations of aging. Student has knowledge about the peculiarities of diseases in old age, the most common nursing problems and disorders, the needs of seniors. Student knows and characterizes geriatric syndromes. Student characterizes clinical examination geriatric patient. Student characterizes geriatric syndrome of frailty, sarcopenia, knows its diagnosis and management. Student is able to describe and explain what is a comprehensive geriatric assessment (CGA Comprehensive geriatric assessment). Student knows the definition, assessment, benefits for working nurses. Student is oriented in issues disorders mobility, balance, falls, immobilization syndrome in old age. Student knows the risk assessment and intervention options. Student knows the evaluation and measurement techniques used in geriatric nursing practice for the evaluation of mobility, movement and self-care. Student is focused on the issue of incontinence in the elderly. Student is focused on the issue of nutritional disorders in old age. Student knows syndrome anorexia, malnutrition, dehydration. Student is focused on the issue of mental health in old age. Student knows behavioral disorders, gerontopsychiatric syndromes. Student is oriented in issues of cognitive impairment in geriatric patients. Student characterized mood disorders - depression. Student characterizes sleep disturbances. Student knows the peculiarities of pharmacology in old age. Student knows the role of nurses (detection of adverse reactions, medication management, adherence). Student characterizes prevention in geriatrics (health care, lifestyle, physical activity, vaccination), healthy aging. Student understood the impact of hospitalization or other institutional care for the elderly. Student characterizes the syndrome EAN, defines ethical issues in geriatrics. The student knows the specifics in communication with the patient in the terminal stages of illness and their families. Student knows possibilities of providing consulting and advisory services. Skills: Student integrates knowledge from other subjects, with an emphasis on the clinic, diagnostic and therapeutic approaches to treatment in geriatrics. Student apply theoretical knowledge in the nursing process in geriatric patients. Student is able to assess the patient's condition and establish nursing care plan respecting peculiarities of approach to geriatric patients. Student educates patients and their family members with focus on the specifics of geriatric patients. Student realizes and evaluates providing of specific nursing care, preventive care and educational activities. Student appropriately uses the evaluation and measurement techniques used in geriatric nursing practice. Student respects the rules of ethics in everyday care, applying knowledge of ethical theories and principles of ethical dilemmas Student applied activities to preserve state sovereignty and habits of senior, use activation techniques for the elderly Student uses a variety of motivational strategies suitable for geriatric patients. Student uses the appropriate documentation in nursing process.
Prerequisites
The course is not conditional, builds on the student's knowledge of the Bachelor's degree course "Nursing care for the elderly."
