Course content
CONTENT FOCUS: Lectures: (2 hours per week - 10 weeks) Week 1. Anaesthesia - history and basic concepts. Theory of anaesthesia, mechanisms of action of anaesthetics and muscle relaxants. Classification of anaesthesia (inhalation, WIMA, intravenous, TIVA, supplemented, combined). Preoperative preparation of the patient. Anesthesia clinic, preoperative examination, premedication, ASA classification, psychological preparation. Elective and acute procedures - differences in practice. Week 2 General anaesthesia: pharmaceuticals used during general anaesthesia (inhalational anaesthetics, intravenous anaesthetics, benzodiazepines, opioids, muscle relaxants, antagonising effects of non-depolarising muscle relaxants), course of CA - introduction, management, termination. Complications during CA and their management. Week 3 Local anaesthesia: pharmaceuticals used for local anaesthesia, adjuvants to local anaesthetics, locoregional anaesthesia, conscious anaesthesia, and central spinal blockade. Complications of MA and their management. Week 4 Monitoring and documentation in anaesthesia. Perioperative provision of the patient. Anaesthesia in children. Anaesthesia in older people. Week 5 Anaesthesia in orthopaedics, traumatology and burn surgery Anaesthesia in neurosurgery Week 6 Anaesthesia in vascular surgery and cardiac surgery Anaesthesia in thoracic surgery Week 7 Anaesthesia in gynaecology and obstetrics Anaesthesia in urology Week 8 Anaesthesia in abdominal surgery Anaesthesia in otorhinolaryngology, stoma surgery and ophthalmic surgery Week 9 Anaesthesia in emergencies Anaesthesia in outpatient surgical procedures Anaesthesia in endoscopic procedures Anaesthesia in patients with associated diseases (morbid obesity, DM, chronic renal failure. Week 10 Analgesia. Treatment of postoperative pain (pharmacological, non-pharmacological). Choice of postoperative analgesia according to different types of surgery. Postoperative analgesia in children, geriatric patients, and outpatients. Acute and chronic pain. The organisation of pain treatment in the Czech Republic, pain clinics. Communication and psychological approach to the patient with pain - Seminars: (2 hours per week - 10 weeks) 1. week The work of the nurse anaesthetist in the operating theatre. Competence of the nurse anaesthetist according to the current legislation. Week 2 Equipment of the anaesthetic department - an anaesthetic trolley/chair. Anaesthesia machine - preparation, work of the nurse. Preparation of the workplace before surgery. Week 3 The organisation of work in the operating theatre. Premedication of the patient. The arrival of the patient in the operating theatre - history, and patient preparation. Week 4 Basic procedures in anaesthesia - ensuring airway patency during anaesthesia Week 5 Basic anaesthetic procedures - ensuring venous access, arterial cannulation Week 6 Positioning of patients before different types of surgery. Patient care during anaesthesiaperioperative management of the patient - fluid therapy, chemotherapy. Week 7 Epidural anaesthesia - preparation of the patient, equipment, role of the nurse Week 8 Subarachnoid anaesthesia - preparation of the patient, equipment, role of the nurse Peripheral nerve blocks - patient preparation, equipment, the role of the nurse Week 9 Recovery room - care of the patient immediately after surgery. Complications and their management. Monitoring of physiological functions. Special features of care for children, geriatric patients and outpatients. Week 10 The role of the nurse in the management of postoperative pain. Assessment scales. VAS. The work of the nurse in the pain clinic.

Learning outcomes
Annotation: The course is designed as a theoretical-practical one. The aim is to obtain basic information on procedures that enable the provision and perioperative care of patients undergoing surgical or diagnostic procedures under general or local anesthesia in all age groups. In addition, the course focuses on the management of postoperative pain, and acute and chronic pain. Objectives: - To familiarize the student with anesthesia and analgesia. - To familiarize the student with the different types of anesthesia - To familiarize the student with the equipment of an anesthesiology department - To familiarize the student with the work of an anesthesiology nurse in the operating room - To familiarize the student with the differences in anesthesia in different surgical disciplines - To familiarize the student with the treatment of acute and chronic pain
Eligibility: - The student understands basic concepts in anaesthesia and analgesia - The student knows the different types of anaesthesia - The student knows the complex equipment of an anesthesiology department - The student understands the use of anaesthetic equipment - Student understands pharmacological agents used in anaesthesia, their indications and effects - The student knows how to apply pharmacological agents used in anaesthesia correctly and recognise adverse effects - The student performs arterial puncture based on a physician's indication - The student understands the problems of anaesthesia in individual surgical disciplines - The student is familiar with the differences in anaesthesia in different surgical disciplines, - The student understands the management of acute and chronic pain
