Course content
Lectures: 2 hours 1. Definition of nursing, characteristics of the field as a scientific discipline. Professional terminology. Fields of nursing. Relation of nursing to other scientific disciplines. 2. Characteristics of basic theoretical concepts. 3. History of nursing. History of medicine and nursing. Beginning of professional nursing: Florence Nightingale. History of Czech nursing. Development of nursing education in the Czech Republic. 4. International activities leading to the development of nursing. 5. The concept of Czech nursing, the regulatory system of nursing practice and types of regulation. Laws and regulations related to non-medical professions. 6. Types of professional education and competences of qualified non-medical workers. Pre- and post-graduate professional education in nursing. 7. Professional organizations of nurses and nutrition therapists at home and abroad, international cooperation and their importance. 8.Metaparadigma of nursing. Humankind and nursing. Health and disease. Health and nursing. Environment in relation to nursing care. 9. Philosophy of nursing holism. Holistic theories of disease origin. 10. Methodology of nursing - nursing process, definition, phases, implementation and significance. The role of a nutritional therapist in the nursing process, research in nursing. Training SS: 2 hours 1. Health care and nursing care systems. Characteristics of work on the treatment unit. Basic nursing terminology. 2. Applying the nursing process to a specific patient. Nursing documentation options, care plans, testing. 3. Nursing process in the care of the client's hygiene needs. 4. Prevention of bedsores. 5. Nursing process in the care of nutrition and hydration of the client. 6. Nursing process in the care of physical activity, self-care and self-sufficiency of the client. 7. Immobilization syndrome and its prevention. 8. Physiological principles of strengthening health: rest, sleep, well-being, pain. 9. Psychosocial principles of health promotion: self-concept, self-esteem, spirituality and religiosity. 10. Multicultural approach in health care, especially focusing on the need for nutritional care, and differences of individual cultures

Learning outcomes
The content of the course is focused on the definition of the field of nursing, its concept in the Czech Republic and in the EU, as well as its history. There are ways to deal with the programme of professional nursing organizations, including the organization of nourishing therapists. The philosophy of nursing is a holistic theory of disease origin.
Students will get acquainted with the importance of nursing for the organization of medical care and therapies. They will understand the meaning of holism and will use it in their future profession.
