Course content
Classes: 1. Mass culture. Definition of basic terms. Human communication typology. Mass communication. Message and communication situations. 2. Type of media, their development, types of communities. Media as a monolog and dialog. 3. Regulation, auto-regulation, censorship, auto- censorship 4. Society, media and advertisement as form of communication. Aggression and mass media. Culture and new technologies of media production. 5. Stereotyping, racism and mass society. Media and types of news. Disinformation, tabloid, cliché, hyper reality. 6. Mass media as a mean of manipulation. Children and mass media.

Monologic (reading, lecture, briefing), Dialogic (discussion, interview, brainstorming)
Learning outcomes
The objective of this workshop is to present to students definitions of the mass culture and mass society terms, present basic critical theories of mass culture, respectively so called mass society and their relationship. In addition attention is paid to so called popular, television culture and some of its products, advertisement, analysis of specific character of electronic means of communication, electronic communication technologies etc.
The student has good grasp of the issues of current society and of the influence of mass culture and understands the role of mass media in present society.
Prerequisites
Previous conclusion of the subject of Sociology is expected.

Assessment methods and criteria
Written examination

Active participation of students during classes - emphasis is laid on combination of monolog and dialog forms. Knowledge acquired in classes and from reading of recommended literature will be verified by a written test.
