Course content
Lectures: 1. The criminal justice system from the perspective of social work, status and tasks of social workers in criminal justice, the probation and mediation in the context criminal law 2. The Probation and Mediation Service, the PMS activity in probation, probation and legal framework for mediation, the role of the probation officer in the probation, probation rehabilitation programs, alternative measures and alternative sanctions 3. Mediation as a tool for resolving conflicts, activities of the PMS in the mediation, the mediation process, the use of mediation Seminars: 1. Defining the role of criminal justice in social work, probation, and its importance in a modern criminal justice system, the role of probation officer 2. Methods and techniques of the probation officer preparing and ensuring the enforcement of probation, probation in the specifics of the trial, the alternative measures and alternative sanctions 3. Basic mediation principles, methods and techniques of probation, mediation background, competence and the role of a mediator, the types of conflict, ways of conflict resolution, professional conversation.

Learning outcomes
The subject is drawn as theoretical-practical and introduces students to the problems of mediation in social and probation work. Students are acquainted with the specifics of social work in criminal justice, especially for professional specialization in the field of probation and mediation activities, firstly in the extra-judicial settlement of disputes by professional negotiators and the alternative measures and alternative sanctions.
Students will learn about solutions in restorative justice, the basic theoretical concepts and specifics of social work in criminal justice. Students understand the basic concepts used in probation and mediation, will get an overview of methods and techniques of working probation officer. Students will learn procedures for dealing with conflict situations and will focus on the activities of the Probation and Mediation Service in the Czech Republic.
