Course content
Lectures 1. Definition of quality of life. (2 hours) 2. Dimensions of quality of life, tools for measuring quality of life. (2 hours) 3. Health and illness. (2 hours) 4. Lifestyle influencing quality of life. (2 hours) 5. Factors influencing quality of life, life satisfaction, well-being. (2 hours) 6. Terminally ill, chronically ill. (2 hours) 7. Model according to E. Kübler Ross, experiencing illness. (2 hours) 8. Chronically ill in the home environment. Care options. (2 hours) 9. Communication with the dying, communication within the family. (2 hours) 10. Support for caregivers, health and social services system. (2 hours) 11. - 12. Hospice movement in the Czech Republic, palliative care. (4 hours) 13. -14. The role of social workers in supporting caregivers. (4 hours)

Learning outcomes
The aim of the course is to familiarize students with basic concepts related to quality of life and factors that influence quality of life in relation to chronically and terminally ill patients. Students will also learn about the hospice movement in the Czech Republic and the principles of palliative care. Emphasis is placed on social work with the target group of chronically and terminally ill patients, both at home and in institutional settings.
The student can explain the concept of quality of life. The student knows the factors that can affect quality of life. The student knows the health and social services system with a focus on the chronically and terminally ill. The student knows the principles of palliative care and is familiar with the hospice care system in the Czech Republic. " The student knows the principles of communication with the dying and is able to communicate with caregivers in a home environment. " The student knows the role of a social/health and social worker in a multidisciplinary team in relation to the care of chronically and terminally ill patients.
