Course content
Lectures 1. Sources of knowledge. Scientific knowledge. Definition of science in social fields and its limits. Research ethics. Validity and reliability. 2. Research in the health and social field. Base records in the health and social field. 3. Research problem, goal and research questions. Operationalization of concepts. Qualitative and quantitative research strategy. 4. Hypothesis as a methodological tool in social sciences. 5. Quantitative research - methods and techniques of data collection. Research file, size and method of selection. 6. Questionnaire, typology of questions. 7. Data processing in quantitative research strategy. Descriptive statistics (especially interpretation of modus, mean and median). PivotTable. 8. Overview of statistical tests according to data typology. Chi-square test and analysis of adjusted residues. 9. Qualitative research - methods and techniques of data collection. Research file, size and method of selection. 10. Interview. Preparation. Types of conversation. 11. Work with qualitative data - fixation, transcription, coding, methodological problems in application. Selected methods of qualitative data processing. 12. Overview of methods of evaluation and interpretation of qualitative data (grounded theory, contrasting). 13. Mixed research. Integration of mixed models. 14. Research plan, research strategy. Project preparation. Pilot issues. Seminars 1.-2. Social reality and the need for its reduction in social science research. Distortion. Base records in the health and social field - examples of good practice. Creation of theoretical background for research. 3.-4. Research problem, goal and research questions. Hypothesis. Qualitative and quantitative research strategy. Operationalization. Training, team work 5.-6. Quantitative research - preparation of a questionnaire. Creating a research project. Class / group data collection. 7.-8. Data matrix creation in SPSS (Statistical Package for Social Sciences). Basic acquaintance with the program. Chi-square test and analysis of adjusted residues. Exercises in the program. 9.-10. Qualitative research - methods and techniques of data collection. Research file, size and method of selection. Training, team work. 11.-12. Interview, creation. Creating a research project with a qualitative research strategy. Class / group data collection. 13.-14. Mixed research. Combination of techniques and methods. Case study - examples. Analytical work in a group.

Learning outcomes
The aim of the course is to acquaint students with the basic research strategies - qualitative and quantitative, including data collection techniques and interpretation options. Furthermore, to provide information on planning in research, which is preceded by a theoretical definition of the issue based on the evidence base in the health and social field and good operationalization.
The student will acquire basic skills for creating a research plan, will be able to plan all phases of research, including the elaboration of theoretical grounding of research and piloting. Can create a questionnaire and interview, process the data obtained and interpret them.
Prerequisites
Prerequisite for mastering the course is a basic knowledge of working on a PC - with regard to the use of statistical programs - especially SPSS used to teach this course.

Student performance assessment, Analysis of student's work activities (technical works), Systematic student observation, Test

Credit: creation of a research project and its presentation - group work; participation in seminars: 90%. Group / class work. Data Collection. Reading of required literature. Exam: 1st part: written exam on PC - work with data matrix in SPSS program (processing of assigned tasks) + coding of transcribed interview (success rate min. 70%); 2nd part: oral exam in methodology.
