Course content

Content focus of lectures and seminars: The course focuses on working with selected software for qualitative and quantitative data analysis, as required by selected research methods and techniques. This mainly involves user knowledge of SPSS (and other selected software, such as TEXTQUEST), particularly in the area of data entry (matrix creation), outputs for descriptive analysis, including their interpretation (mode, mean, and median; contingency tables as a basis for recategorization); in ATLAS.ti (or other qualitative analysis software) for creating and working with categories in qualitative research, including outputs in the form of diagrams, maps (etc.) or code lists.

Learning outcomes
|
Graduates of this course will acquire knowledge and skills related to the analysis of qualitative and quantitative data using available software, including comprehensive orientation in software environments. They will be able to graphically edit the outputs from these programs for the purposes of scientific work and presentations, e.g., at conferences.

Output from the data matrix created in SPSS and a list of open codes from ATLAS.ti; recategorization (quantitative orientation) and further coding in the qualitative strategy (possible suggestions for further data processing, e.g., according to Grounded Theory). Output from quantitative research processed using basic descriptive statistics, including necessary recategorization and proposed statistical tests. Students will prepare output from selected data analysis software in connection with the focus of their dissertation (especially research strategies) - e.g., either in ATLAS.ti (in the form of maps/diagrams and a list of codes) or in SPSS ("output"). The exam discussion will focus on the data and its interpretation, including options for further software or analytical processing (selected statistical tests, other types of coding, and other display options).
