Course content
|
1. Bilingual teaching, CLIL - fundamental principles and key concepts; CLIL resources and support. 2. Language of learning, language for learning, language through learning. 3. Dimensions of curriculum: aims, content, methods, organisation. 4. The 4 Cs of CLIL: Content, Communication, and Cognition: the Culture of learning and instruction. 5. Conceptual knowledge, procedural knowledge, and metacognition; know what/that, know how, know with; cognitive discourse functions. 6. Course objectives vs. learning outcomes. Planning, delivery, and assessment. 7. Examples of CLIL methods for teaching science.

Learning outcomes
|
The aim of the course is to introduce students to the principles and methods of instruction that combines the content of science with fostering communication skills in English. The CLIL (Content and Language Integrated Learning) approach is one of the significant trends in European education. It is also supported by Czech Ministry of Education. The course raises students' language awareness, which is a significant factor for successful teaching.
Students will gain a deeper understanding of the content dimension of the curriculum. Students will gain a deeper understanding of language as a factor that influences the quality of teaching. Students will be able to apply CLIL methods when teaching at secondary schools.

Assessment methods and criteria
|
Student portfolio analysis, Interim evaluation
Active participation (you may miss a maximum of two classes). Two micro-teaching sessions: you will lead two 20 min. sessions to present and try out activities based on selected CLIL methods (your own desing). Submission of materials for the activities you have tried out in the seminar (incl. possible adjustments and comments). Submission of group work: a thematic unit using CLIL activities, which will include (a) motivational intro, (b) exposure to a new content, (c) practice, (d) assessment, (e) application for a new context (a bridge to another thematic unit, practical application, etc.). Presentation of the groupwork in the last week of the semester (" credit week").
