Course content
1. Specific water properties and consequences for: - internal (self) functioning of organisms - "water in life" - "life in water" aquatic environment as habitat 2. Physical chemical parameters of water, Water as solvent, reaction mediator Properties of aquatic environment 3. Specific water properties and consequences for: - formation of the Earth's overall environment 4. Water as an energy mediator. Water as transport agent 5. Water as a key factor for landscape functioning 6. Types of water and wetland biotopes important in our country: - their origin and characteristics - importance in the landscape - protection 7. Productivity of water and wetlands Significant in our country: - production of eutrophic sites - anthropogenic eutrophication - economic exploitation 8. How to understand the concept of "ecological stability" in ecology of waters and wetlands 9. Biodiversity of water and wetlands

Learning activities and teaching methods
Monologic (reading, lecture, briefing), Excursion
  • Preparation for classes - 75 hours per semester
  • Class attendance - 60 hours per semester
  • Semestral paper - 50 hours per semester
  • Field trip - 20 hours per semester
Learning outcomes
Learning outcomes of the course lead students to familiarize with specific ecological principles in wetlands and shallow freshwaters, both in natural and anthropogenic systems. General ecological issues of wetlands and shallow waters are explain in relation of central European climatic conditions as well as in the context of different climate regions. Practical aspects of the use and protection of waters and wetlands are included. Examples of evaluation of abiotic factors, phytocoenoses and zoocenoses in selected water and wetland ecosystems are described. Excursions to selected wetlands is an integral part of the course.
Students are encouraged to independently access knowledge and use the knowledge they acquired during their studies and the subsequent study of recommended literature. Students will acquire the ability to orientate in water and wetland protection. They gain information on where and how they can further learn about water and wetland protection. Students are able to assess the importance of surface water and wetland quality, to recognize situations such as water blooms and to assess the degree of eutrophication of surface water.
Prerequisites
The students are able to approach the work creatively and in an initiative, they use relevant data (literature, own experience, experience of experts) and knowledge of the bachelor study (environmental subjects and environmental subjects).

Assessment methods and criteria
Combined exam, Seminar work

Graduation of lectures and exercises , active stand-alone work completed by submitting a seminar paper, attending excursions (not strictly obligatory but very desirable)
